HOW TO GET ON BOARD
20 spots on board our train have been reserved for the first 20 applicants that reach a $5k fundraising goal on our custom crowdfunding platform to cover participation costs.
Applicants that apply early and actively engage their social networks to reach their fundraising goal the fastest have the best chance of getting on board. Anyone age 18-34 is eligible to apply. MTP will cover domestic airfare to Portland and from New York for all applicants that reach their goal by May 1st (the general crowdfunding deadline is June 1st).
IMAGINE YOUR PROJECT
We stop in 7 cities in 10 days. In each locality, passengers have 5-6 hours to advance a project that benefits, serves, and inspires others.
This is your opportunity to explore whatever you consider to be your own personal frontier across multiple regions of the United States. Some applicants will use this opportunity to advance projects that relate directly to their full-time work, while others will envision new projects that allow them to gain experience in a completely new and unrelated field.
Notably, it is not required that you work on your project every single day of the journey. Participants who do not wish to work on their project in any given locality will have the opportunity to participate in site visits to local businesses and civic ventures which MTP will lead in its destinations.
BUILD YOUR CAMPAIGN
In order to gain a seat on the train, crowd-hitchers must raise $5,000 by June 1st.
Whether the intended outcome of your project is a white paper, a series of murals, or a podcast, defining exactly what you will use your MTP experience to create and how you will share it with others is essential to building a successful campaign. The more specific your project is, the easier it will be for potential supporters to appreciate why your campaign is worth supporting.
The most successful campaigns communicate their ideas in video and images as well as text. They succinctly convey what the project is, why it matters, and your personal motivations for applying.
We recommend, but do not require, that you build a constituency of at least 10 supporters behind your campaign.
These are a few of our favorites from around the Internet:
It's a race to hitch a ride. The first 20 applicants to raise $5,000 will secure a seat on the train.
Beyond creating a compelling project proposal, our application process requires candidates to build a community of support around their journey -- so you'll need to get creative about how you let others know about campaign (usually more than once!) and be direct in asking for their support.
There is no magic formula to reach the $5,000 mark -- but a number of existing technologies combined with hard work and creativity can make this a lot easier than it might seem. We came up with a few ideas to get the ball rolling:
1. SEND A PERSONAL NOTE (TO A LOT OF PEOPLE). Start with a nice, personal message to friends and family. Then, build a larger audience using social media and MAILCHIMP (or something like it) to send out a custom designed message to all your Gmail, Facebook, and LinkedIn contacts.
2. DO SOMETHING IN THE REAL WORLD. Nothing beats an in-person appeal, so don't be afraid to go door-to-door in your neighborhood/dorm/building, throw fundraising parties or bring back the old car wash to spread the word.
4. PICK UP THE PHONE AND CALL. Your family and friends will be happy to hear from you and interested to learn about what you're doing.
It's worth the effort. The more work you do early in the application process to build a community of supporters behind your crowd-hitch campaign, the more rewarding it will be when you reach your fundraising goal and ultimately set off on your journey.
